Working name of Swiss artist and designer Hans Rudolf Giger (1940-2014), whose weirdly fascinating and disturbing paintings and structures gained worldwide acclaim with the release of Ridley Scott's Alien (1979). Usually executed in a range of blue-greys, HRG's works, evidently influenced by the Surrealists Max Ernst and Antonio Gaudí (1852-1926), plumb the most disturbing regions of the subconscious, combining organic and mechanoid forms in a morbidly obsessive manner.
HRG provided designs for, aside from Alien, Poltergeist II (1986) (see Poltergeist) and Species (1995); his work has been imitated in many other movies. [RT]
